David Steinhardt collaborated with Louis and Susan Neff of San Rafael to turn an ordinary interior stairway into an extraordinary journey through their family history.

Painted in photorealistic style, Steinhardt’s mural takes the Neffs down memory lane frame by frame, from their youth in San Francisco to their eventual migration to San Rafael. 35mm film unrolls down the stairway’s ceiling, exposing 24 snapshots of San Francisco, and the Neff family past, present and future.

Pictured is a collage of images from the project. Go to the next page to see how the images were painted on the stairway.
